The RCPSQ is an autonomous community organization that represents the voices of its members. It supports them in their missions and promotes their unique expertise. The RCPSQ provides unifying leadership and ensures ongoing monitoring of suicide prevention efforts.

Our goals and objectives

  • Bring together and mobilize our member organizations in relation to the service offerings of Quebec’s Suicide Prevention Centres (SPC);

  • Represent, promote, and defend the interests of our members with local, regional, and provincial stakeholders;

  • Increase awareness and recognition of the services, practices, and expertise of SPC in every region of Quebec;

  • Enhance suicide crisis intervention practices through various means, such as training, conferences, and other initiatives;

  • Encourage the exchange of information and services among member organizations;

  • Support actions aimed at advancing suicide prevention in Quebec.

Our story

1978
The first suicide prevention centre in Québec and in Canada is created: the Centre de prévention du suicide de Québec.
1986
Founding members of existing suicide prevention centres, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in suicide prevention establish the Association québécoise de suicidologie (AQS), which became in 2002 the Association québécoise de prévention du suicide (AQPS).
2000
2001
The Table of executive directors of SPC affiliated with AQPS is created. In 2005, it publishes the document « Constats, enjeux et tendances », which highlights the challenges faced by SPC within AQPS, an association that also brings together researchers, people bereaved by suicide, organizations, schools, and actors from the health and social services network.
2006
The SPC begin a reflection and identify the need to create an association, whether internal or external to AQPS.
2008
Members attending AQPS’s Annual General Assembly agree on the necessity of creating a provincial association of SPC. The organization’s board of directors is mandated to ensure the coexistence of such a group along with a provincial structure for collaboration that brings together all stakeholders concerned with suicide prevention.
2011
The Table of Executive Directors of SPC undertakes to clarify and strengthen its mandate.
2012
The Table of Executive Directors of SPC, supported by AQPS, develops a document entitled Offre de services des centres de prévention du suicide du Québec.
2014
A temporary Board of Directors is formed, with the mandate to carry out the various actions leading to the creation of the regrouping.
2015
The RCPSQ is founded in June, following the receipt of its letters patent in January. A first Board of Directors with seven positions is established.
2018
Québec’s Ministry of Health and Social Services recognizes the RCPSQ and grants it its first core funding.

Our members

The Suicide Prevention Centres (SPC) that are members of the RCPSQ are community-based organizations specialized in suicide prevention. They are present in several regions across Quebec.

Thanks to their knowledge of local realities, they have developed a wide range of services that are diverse and adapted to the many dimensions of the issue of suicide.
